We at K-9 New Life have the dog's best interest at heart. We want all of the dogs to be adopted out to loving families. We want to make sure that both K-9 New Life and the adoptive family feel they are able to handle the great responsibilities that come with adopting an animal. Pet adoption can place a physical, mental, and financial burden on a household and we want to make sure that your family is prepared to deal with this. For more information and things to consider before adopting an animals please visit The Truth about Dogs and Reasons to Consider a Rescue

We have an adoption application which you can download. It is a Microsoft Word Document, if you need the application in a different form please let us know it can also be simply sent as an e-mail. After Downloading it you can fill it out and e-mail it back to the K-9 New Life. Make sure to answer all questions thoroughly on the application failure to do so will slow down the process. Download the Application here Once we receive your application we will then review it. Please be patient we contact approved applicants as soon as possible Email adoptions@k9newlife.com with applications or questions about dogs. Since we are an all volunteer organization and our time is limited we are unable to follow up on applications that are not accepted. If you do not hear from us within three weeks please assume your application has not been accepted. We are sorry for the inconvenience but due to the overwhelming number of applications and to the limited time of volunteers time is always precious. We prefer to adopt out to Eastern Virginia and North Eastern North Carolina *within a 50 mile radius* due to having to set up homechecks but will consider long distance adoptions on a case by case basis. A fence is required for most of the dogs that we have for adoption but there are exceptions as we evaluate each odg and their needs on a case by case basis.
After a representative has reviewed your application we then perform a vet check. Which is making sure that any animals that are in your house are current on their vaccinations as well as heartworm prevention.
We may then perform a phone interview allowing us to get a better feel for the type of dog that would best suit your lifestyle. As well as clarify any questions we might have concerning your application. We encourage you to ask any questions or concerns that you might have about adopting a dog.
We may then do a home check. The home check allows us to make sure that your house is dog friendly and that you are ready and understand the responsibilities that come with adopting a dog. All family members including current animals must be present for the homecheck.
We understand that adopting a dog is an emotional process. If for any reason your application is not accepted please remember there are many other local organizations that also have dogs looking for new homes. Please do not become discouraged. We are looking for the best possible homes for our rescued dogs as they have already been through the trauma of being homeless. We reserve the right to refuse or deny any application.
All of our foster dogs are up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested, and are spayed/neutered. Our foster dogs come from many places. Some are dogs that are on doggy death row at the local animal pounds, others are owner turn in's that are no longer wanted by their families. We rescue dogs of all ages, breeds, and backgrounds. We require a donation of $185 0 be made for the adoption of our dogs. Veterinary care for rescue dogs can be quite expensive and this is why we ask for this donation. For example a routine spay or neuter from your average vet will cost $100-120. A set of shots from an average vet will run anywhere from $$80-$90. A heartworm test is $25 and a heartworm prevention for a 50 pound dog is $3.75 per month. If the dog is heartworm positive and needs treatment the treatment is over $400.00. We provide vet care to all of our dogs and this can be quite expensive, so we rely on your support. This fee is non-refundable.
If you are looking for a specific type of dog please fill out an application and e-mail it to us even if we do not have that type of dog on the website. We are more than happy to act as a referral service to try to help you find that dog even if it is with another shelter or rescue group. Our main goal is to help find homes for animals in need. We also have contacts within the local pounds that can notify you if the dog you are looking for comes into the pound. So let us help you find your new best friend!
